One of my greatest-longest friends asked me about a hand made turkey. She had told me that she recently attended a craft show and couldn't find a hand made turkey, what!? So of course i challenged myself to make one. This guy, believe it or not took some thinking because i had never really thought about making a turkey before. After a couple days, i came up with a plan.....
***This is a list of tools and materials i used***
1.) I found the metal sunflower at Dollar General
2.)Metal cutters, hot glue gun, pliers, paint brushes & sponges
3.) Paint- i used red, white, yellow, orange and black. I also used some dark stain
4.) Small wood beads and a piece of twine for the hanger
5.) Round or any small piece of wood-about 4 inches in diameter
6.) a piece of wood to cut/shape into a triangle(nose)
7.) A piece of wood to cut/shape into a waddle
I found a scrap piece of wood that was in a pack of wooden rounds that i had in my craft stash that i used for his face. then i found a paint stick and cut the end off to make his nose or beak. After that i had been working on a project with an old truck that had a fender i imagined would work for the turkeys waddle.
***NOTE*** I didn't take a picture of the wood round or the paint stick but here is the truck fender i used. I just popped it off and used it for the waddle.
This is the final step, and that's putting him all together. I painted the center of the sunflower black and painted the "feathers" all white. Then i took my orange, black and yellow paint and graduated the colors up his feathers. Then i used my dark stain at the top and married it with the yellow and white paint. After that i painted the beak and the waddle. Next i found 2 tiny buttons and placed a dot of white paint on there for his eyes. My last and final step was to glue everything in place and thread my beads onto the piece of twine.
Get inspired to think outside the box like i did with this guy! My friend just thought he was the cutest little guy and i still have the other half to make another one.

This next DIY is a tray I redid that I found a couple years ago at Dollar General after Christmas. I believe I got it on clearance at 70% off.....score!! Usually any time I find trays on sale or clearance, I snatch them up .
1.) Wooden Tray
2.) Plastic or Vinyl Placemat
3.) Ribbon
4.) Flowers
5.) Hot Glue Sticks
6.) Glue Gun
7.) Paint
8.) Scissors
9.) Sand Paper
10.) Ribbon & Flower w/ Greenery
My tray was all white with "Eat, Drink and Be Merry" painted in the center. I sanded the gold script down as much as I could and used white acrylic paint in a thin layer just on the body part of the tray to cover up the writing. Then I used black paint to paint a border on the top and sides of the center of the tray.
After the black border dried, I then took my placemat and cut it to fit the area I wanted to cover. I hot glued the placemat to the tray. I wasn't sure if I wanted it to be permanent and knew with hot glue, I could pop it off if I wanted to change it later.
After my placement was secure, I found a piece of scrap buffalo check ribbon and attached it to the top, above my placement. Then I had some flowers and greenery that I had left over from a wedding centerpiece I had done a little while back and stapled it to the ribbon.
This quick little make over was a fun project to create on a rainy Sunday afternoon. There are so many placement available in just about all stores these days so you're sure to find one or several that you can create something beautiful out of.
